dog workingThere is a remarkable variety of very good working dogs.  Dogs are very flexible and can perform a multitude of tasks.  They have uses in all fields of work, including security and policing where dogs are used for their ability to deter intruders and apprehend them, but also bomb & drug detection where there strong sense of smell comes into play in the fight against crime.  Working dogs also include therapy dogs, and guide dogs – in which the dog acts as a companion, and a guide to people who are blind.

The value on working dogs cannot be overstated enough – in the past they have saved many lives, and even with the advent of modern technology, their role has not diminished.  Sniffer dogs are still very important, as their sense of smell is second to none.  Rescue dogs are deployed all around the world in cases of natural disaster, as their sense of smell can locate trapped individuals very, very quickly.  The armed forces and police tend to use dogs primarily as attack dogs, where they are trained to attack intruders or detain intruders on demand, but also to identify narcotics, and bomb making materials.   The German shepherd is possibly one of the most famous attack dogs currently being employed by the various police and armed forces around the world.  Sniffer dogs tend to be smaller dogs with a heightened sense of smell, and are assessed individually based on talent for the job.
